This detailed selection guide for large air coolers covers all key aspects of the process, from parameter calculation to installation, helping you find a high-reliability model suitable for your industrial environment.
1. Core Basic Parameters That Must Be Confirmed Before Selection
This section is essential for manufacturers to complete accurate thermal calculations and cannot be omitted:
Cooled Medium Parameters: Clearly define the medium name, flow rate, inlet temperature, and target outlet temperature. This is the core basis for heat exchange load calculation.
Ambient Cooling Conditions: Provide the extreme maximum/minimum ambient temperatures for the project location during summer to avoid insufficient cooling capacity under extreme conditions.
Boundary Constraints: Clearly define the limitations of on-site installation space and the maximum allowable pressure drop range of the system piping.
Special Operating Requirements: Confirm whether the medium is corrosive and whether there is a risk of freezing in winter, and match corresponding protection solutions in advance.
2. Key Selection Points for Core Performance Parameters
Heat Exchange Area and Load: First, calculate the total heat exchange load. The number of cooler rows along the airflow direction should typically be 4-6, with a maximum of 8 rows. A 15%-20% area safety factor should be reserved to offset heat exchange attenuation caused by surface dust and internal scaling.
Airflow Velocity Control: The recommended airflow velocity is 2.5-3.5 kg/(m2s). If the velocity exceeds 3 kg/(m2s), a baffle plate must be added after the cooler to prevent water carryover.
Medium Side Parameter Matching: The cooling water velocity inside the pipes should be controlled at 0.6-1.5 m/s, with a chilled water temperature rise of 5-10℃. The chilled water inlet temperature should be at least 3.5℃ lower than the air outlet dry-bulb temperature to prevent condensation.
Pressure and Temperature Range Compatibility: The standard KL series models operate at pressures ≤0.63MPa, while the FL series can support up to 1.6MPa. The design temperature limit is generally 100℃. For high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, a custom structure needs to be pre-designed.
3. Structure and Ventilation Selection
Ventilation Method Selection: Forced-draft systems allow air to pass through a fan before flowing into the tube bundle, resulting in lower operating costs and better turbulence, making them the preferred choice for most conventional scenarios. Exhaust-draft systems offer more uniform airflow distribution and lower noise, suitable for scenarios with strict requirements on temperature control accuracy and plant noise levels.
Pipeline Connection: When the air volume is large, the cooler units should be arranged in parallel, with the water supply lines connected in parallel simultaneously. When a large air temperature drop is required, a series arrangement should be used, with the water supply lines connected in series simultaneously to ensure that the chilled water and air flow in opposite directions.
Material Compatibility: Carbon steel finned tubes are suitable for ordinary operating conditions. For chemical scenarios with corrosion risks, stainless steel fins and tubes are preferred to extend the equipment's service life.
4. Installation and Matching Requirements
Installation Location: Can be installed horizontally, vertically, or at an angle. It is essential to ensure that condensate flows naturally down the fins to prevent water accumulation, which reduces heat transfer efficiency and increases air resistance.
Drainage System: A drip tray and drain pipe must be installed at the bottom of the cooler. When multiple units are stacked, an intermediate drip tray should be added in the middle. The drain pipe must be equipped with a water seal to prevent air intake from affecting drainage.
Freezing Prevention and Temperature Control: For media prone to freezing in winter, a hot air circulation or steam heating device can be added. The outlet temperature of the hot fluid can be precisely controlled by adjusting the fan speed, blade angle, and louver opening.
5. Manufacturer and After-Sales Service Selection Reference
Prioritize professional manufacturers with large-scale production bases and automated fin winding production lines. Focus on three core capabilities:
Industry Adaptability Experience: Prioritize brands with over three consecutive years of trouble-free operation cases in the same industry, such as customized models adapted for chemical and papermaking scenarios.
Service Response Capability: Manufacturers are required to provide a 72-hour on-site service commitment and a regional spare parts warehousing network to minimize downtime.
Warranty Guarantee: Suppliers offering complete machine warranties, regular inspections, and operational training are prioritized to reduce long-term maintenance costs.
